Duolingo user reviews :

I like this app! It’s useful! I didn’t use to have it on my phone when I was a teenager, for example, but I think that it is a must for everyone who knows how learning a language can expand your knowlegde in this life! In the last time, I used it especially for three languages and it helped me a lot! (I like those grammar tips etc.) I believe that Duolingo is the best app for learning a (foreign) language!

I liked better the previous version (the one that was in production when I began using Duolingo) because it allowed me to choose the vocabulary that I wanted to practice. Now that the grammar topics are displayed, I can no longer choose what I need. Also, the disappearance of the short stories is annoying. The previous app was better and more useful.

Too much repetition of the same basic words and sentences (also useless ones, like I’ve had over 1000 times words like Mark, Maria, John or Chicago repeated while learning Japanese) which really stunted my enthusiasm for using the app. It’s okay, but the lessons are too long and too repetitive, while grammar and order of words in a sentence is never properly explained, driving confusion and irritation. Love the quests, progression and dailies tho, motivates me to do more than I initially planned

Overall the app is very good, with the streak, the double point bonuses and the reminders, it gets to you to study every day, even if only a little. I miss the “repair” feature where you had to go back over previous exercises and refresh your knowledge. Of course you can choose to go back, but this feature forced you to, and I think it was beneficial.

It’s over all great so far. Having no problems with the technical side of the app. It runs great and hasn’t crashed once in the 8 days I’ve used it. However there’s a few problems with learning. I’m doing the Spanish course and many times when it reads out a sentence the words aren’t all audible. When reading it out words like de, un, una and other small ones are drowned out. The only way to catch them is using the button to slow it down. It also doesn’t teach grammar very well.

It’s not perfect, but it is a great way to learn a language or to brush up on one. They contnually upgrade, which is nice except that you get used to how it works and then it changes. I have gone through 2 major changes while learning one language, and on one of them I felt like the change set me back, progress-wise. I miss easy access to grammar rules, verb conjugations, etc. But Duolingo is surprisingly effective even without them. A tiny lesson each day is much easier to stick to, too.
