Horizon Explorer – Explore the terrain for anywhere in the world

[Game] Horizon Explorer (ARCore)

Horizon Explorer

Point your camera at a hill, village, lake or landmark on the horizon and Horizon Explorer will tell you what you’re aiming at.

Name, distance, altitude and map of the pointed at landmark will be displayed. Wikipedia markers for points of interest are overlaid on the view with Augmented Reality.

Fly up high and see the terrain laid out below you to see what is over the hills around you, and get the lay of the land, then see the scale-model 3D map that you can walk around to find out what’s behind hills, or explore the terrain for anywhere in the world.

Horizon Explorer works worldwide, but works best on top of a hill with an unobstructed view of your surroundings. You can drag the horizon line with your finger to line up with the camera if the automatic tracking is not working very well. Or try waving your phone around in the air in a figure 8, then pressing “autoalign” to calibrate the compass.

This app does not currently do notifications, adverts or run in the background.

More features coming soon!

This app uses Google’s ARCore to do augmented reality. This technology is currently only available on ~35 phones: developers.google.com/ar/discover/supported-devices

If you don’t already have the latest ARCore app installed, you will be prompted to install / update it from the Play Store when you first open Horizon Explorer.

Horizon Explorer user reviews :

This app is really cool, and has improved massively in the short time since I’ve first downloaded it. Thanks to the developers for fixing the RTL-languages issue I mentioned in my previous review!

  • Thanks. Is it the place-names next to the crosshair that display backwards? We haven’t tested with any right-to-left languages, but I’ll try to find someone that speaks one and get it sorted. If you can help with this (even just describe / annotated screenshot of what is wrong), please email hello@horizon-explorer.com.
Thanks

  • Right to left language support has been added in the latest version. Thanks for reporting!

  • Other units are coming in the next update in a few weeks time. Did you want feet / miles? Turn by turn directions, or at least plotting routes as lines that appear augmented over the terrain are on the wish list. If you’d like to give more information about what you use horizon explorer / new features for, please email hello@horizon-explorer.com.
Absolutely brilliant, really useful and great fun to use

  • Thanks for the review! If you’d like to help direct future development, please feel free to email hello@horizon-explorer.com saying what you currently find horizon explorer useful for, and any features you’d like to see in future.
What a great app. I use it for outdoors to compare and plan my runs. If you are a hikker or a mountain enthusiast it’s totally recommended. As a small feature request it would be great if we could load a route and get the ar features on that.

  • Thank you for the review! We’d like to add shared points and routes at some point, possibly as glowing lines overlaid on the terrain.
