[App] SW Maps – GIS & Data Collector

SW Maps  SW Maps is a free GIS and mobile mapping app for collecting, presenting and sharing geographic information.

Whether you are conducting a full scale GNSS survey with high precision instruments, need to collect large amount of location based data using nothing but your phone, or just need to view a few shapefiles with labels over a background map on the go, SW Maps has it all covered.

Record points, lines, polygons and even photos and have them displayed over your choice of background map, and attach custom attribute data to any feature. Attribute types include text, numbers, an option from a predefined set of choices, photos, audio clips and videos.

Conduct high accuracy GPS surveys using external RTK capable receivers over Bluetooth or USB Serial.

Draw features on the map by adding markers, and measure distance and area.

Reuse the layers and attributes of a previous project for another survey, or create templates and share them with other users.

Share the collected data with other users as Geopackages, KMZ or shapefiles, or export them to your device storage. Also share and export recorded data as Spreadsheets (XLS/ODS) or CSV files.

SW Maps user reviews :

Its a truly useful app. If we could add DATE and TIME in attribute types of layers and record the system date and time, it would be more useful for my public transport system survey.

Excellent application. Very useful for navigation and routes recording. I would like to add the option to lock the map in north direction during recording.

App is good. And also develop length feature also at the earliest

Hi, looks very interesting, but I can’t download any files (shape, gpkg). When I open “add new layer” I haven’t any possibilities to choose file from my device (all rights were accepted). Thanks!

  • Copy your shapefiles to the SW_Maps/Maps/shapefiles folder on your device.

Very useful. It would be great it could be made more easier to export to Gis softwares

Practical application for creating geographic layers and collecting data.

First impression is that this app is fantastic. I have one problem, if anyone could help me with this I am very happy: the app doesn’t show up in the list of mock location apps in the developer settings, so I am not able to set it as mock location provider. The manual does suggest this is possible. Anyone knows this issue and how to solve it? — EDIT — That’s not what I meant: what if you’d like to use an other app to do a survey because it has specific functionalities? That is what I’d like. I am using OpenDataKit for this, which allows me to make survey forms.

  • Hi, we removed the mock location service in version 2.0 as it was making the external GPS unstable. You don’t need to enable mock location to use external receivers with SW Maps anymore. We will be updating the manual soon.

This app is really amazing&has a lot of potential for field work and surveying projects. The only thing that I am wondering (not sure if this really isnt possible yet, or if I am missing something): when you add layer attributes, I cannot modify them anymore afterwards. Also I cannot change their order (would be nice to have a drag and drop). That means if I add a layer attribute&made a mistake, I would have to delete the whole thing and make it new. Any chance you can change&improve that?thx
