ChessCraft is a chess sandbox with an AI computer opponent. Customise chess boards, rules, and pieces. Share your creations online. Play your friends online, or play the computer, or choose from one of 75 built-in chess boards in adventure mode.

Many chess AI mobile games already exist, but only ChessCraft allows the player to create such wacky boards and pieces and immediately play a decent computer opponent.
Create new pieces with any combination of the 8 bishop or rook slides, plus a 7×7 grid of knight-like hops. Pieces can also enhance or restrict nearby pieces. Create new boards with any enabled or disabled tile up to 16×16. Place promotion rules for any piece, anywhere. Place tile rules like witch windows (teleporters), sanctuaries, and more. The computer AI opponent then uses concepts from computer science and graph theory to understand your creations and play against you.
When you share a board, your friends can play the AI too. Sharing creates a new web page just for you, like this:

As a suggestion though, I suggest more piece and tile rules to be added, e.g. if a piece takes an enemy piece, it has a certain effect, etc. Also, it would be nice if the board creator tools are simplified and more are added, like removing only the ’tile modifier’ and not the piece on that tile. Pretty useful when creating huge mistakes on my board creations. Other than those, it’s perfection!
- Thanks for the suggestions! I’m still working on features.
I like this game, you can make some interesting pieces and boards. You can essentially make a puzzle if you like. I just wish for 2 things. More rules for pieces (Like capture piece when captured) and be able to import custom images for pieces (although it is alright without this but I like more Variety ) I recommend this game if you like chess or wanna make diffirent variations of chess.
- Thanks. This is a very popular feature request! I’m still adding new features, so subscribe to the newsletter to stay tuned: www.chesscraft.ca/faq
This is a great game to play. A mode that can have more than two players would be great, like having one extra side for Mercenaries, in different colors of course. Maybe with that there could also be teams, and an option to choose which direction the extra sides face?
- Thanks! Interesting suggestions, I’ll consider it. And let me know if you have any other ideas: www.chesscraft.ca/faq
Has a wide selection of interesting variants. I’m not a huge fan of regular chess, but I keep playing this. I agree with the review calling stalemates frustrating, but there’s not much to be done with that since it’s a rule of the standard game for a reason. Maybe adventure mode can give a minor award (since a tournament would give a half point), or there was an option to warn you before you caused a draw, especially due to repetition (since it’s easier to have happen on the smaller boards).
Great game. So far I’ve only played adventure, but it’s pretty fun already. There are a few typos in some of the descriptions, but the reason I didn’t give 5 stars was because of 2 things. First, I believe there is a wrong piece in front of the black tree in neebling (doe not lion). Second, I was trying to get the 2 seconds per turn badge and realized that it’s basically impossible for levels 3 and 4 because they take a while to make a move and the timer seems to count their time.
- Oops, you’re right! I’ll fix Neebling in the next version. As for the timer, it should be working correctly. You may be seeing your opponent’s timer tick, which is okay. I have won those time badges on 3 and 4 plenty. Thanks for the review!
This is a very well designed and engaging sandbox, and I’m surprised at how well the computer handles such bizarre pieces. I do think it’d be nice to be able to play this with friends online, or have more options to customize pieces, but within the bounds of a free to play game without ads this is an amazing game. I do think the controls are in need of work, as double tapping a piece deselects it, which can be frustrating on larger boards where you just want to move a piece one space forward.
