Flora Incognita – Suitable for the identification of wild plants

[App] Flora Incognita – automated plant identification

The Flora Incognita App enables you to identify the plants of Central Europe automatically quickly, easily and accurately .

The identification process is intuitive: take a picture of the flower and the leaf with camera of your smartphone. The unknown plant is then identified automatically within seconds. In addition to the specific plant species name, a species profile page presents further information such as characteristics, distribution or protection status of the species. You can also save, export or share your plant observations on different social media channels.

On repeated occasions we would like to point out that the app is suitable for the identification of wild plants . We do NOT support the numerous breeding and crossing of garden and indoor plants !

The app contains:

automatic identification of 4800+ plant species of the Central European wild flora
species portraits for each species with information on appearance, toxicity, protection status, distribution
more than 10.000 pictures of the Central European flora
a species list with all species
search and filter function for fast finding of a species
creation of observation lists
export function of observations

Comments:

We cannot include ornamental and indoor plants in the determination at the present time.

Why location query? The aim of the Flora Incognita project is also plant mapping. This is only possible if we have the recorded plants at a location. Further information can be found on our website.

Use with account or without account? You do not have to register to use the Flora Incognita App to identify plants. If you do not want to create a profile, tap “Use without account” on the login page. To create a profile, all you need to do is enter an email address and a password. All your recorded plant observations will be saved under this profile. This means that you can also log into the Flora Incognita App on another or a new device and have your entire collection of plant finds with you. Detailed information can be found here on our website.

The Flora Incognita app is jointly developed by scientists from the Technical University of Ilmenau and the Max Planck Institute for Biogeochemistry in Jena. We are continuously working on improving the app. We would be delighted to receive your suggestions for improvement at any time.

Flora Incognita is a joint project funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Building and Nuclear Safety (BMUB), the German Federal Agency for Nature Conservation (BfN) and the Thuringian Foundation for Nature Conservation (Naturschutzstiftung Thüringen) in accordance with the guidelines for funding research projects to implement the National Strategy for Biodiversity.

Flora Incognita user reviews :

Excellent! Easy to use, intuitive menus. Very esy to handle pictures from camera or from phone storage. Please check below issue: Photos taken elsewhere and uploaded later to application, keep as observation location the location where photo has been uploaded not the original one and cannot be changed back to observation place. If there are some steps to follow in order to make the above changes, please notice me. Thank you!

  • Hello. We read the exif data from the photos. If your photos have no coordinates we save no location. Could you please send us the screenshot with the wrong location? Thank you very much. The needle in the map is your location but not the saved location. Thanks
Love the app, too bad that unknown plants that are placed for review, are NEVER reviewed I really love the app, if they could fix this issue it would be amazing Response to reply; That’s not the issue that I have with this app. It’s that the plants/trees that can’t be identified, have the option to “ask for an experts advise” so I’ve done that several times and never had any of the items properly ID’d by an expert. No one follows up.

Nice app, the identification of different plants is pretty accurate, there is a detailed description of all species. The application itself is practical and easy to use. It would be pretty good if there was bryophyta identifying app like this one.
