Google Play Newsstand reviews:

Nice to see magazines on Play. Overall the app does what it’s intended (gets magazines on your device). The pros? Read a magazine on my phone and things are synced to my Nook Color. Prices seem to be on par with Barnes & Noble as well as overall reading experience similar my Nook & the B&N app (i.e. text only mode, jump to page, jump to article, etc). I especially like that (it seems) I am streaming magazines rather than taking up space with storing them locally (though I’m sure some space is held for caching) *or* I have the option to download for offline reading when I have no signal. The cons? Aforementioned streaming can be a bit sluggish (I tested on my home wifi connection). Seems the Play Store app has not been updated to make purchases easily direct from the app…when you hit the store link it just comes to the main store app page with no mention of magazines anywhere, though managing subscriptions is handled by the standard desktop page. I’d also like to see the ability to read magazines with the web page & desktop shortcuts for my phone (similar to the Play Books experience). 3 stars for now, possible upgrade once the Mags app is on par with Books.

Google Play Newsstand app opens up the Play Store web page within the app instead of being able to navigate the content within the app itself. Also, if you currently have a subscription to one of the magazines in the catalog you are not able to merge your offline subscription with the Play Store version. When these issues are resolved I will revise the rating.

Ok, I’m sure I’m not the first to say this, but there needs to be a way to tie the digital content to my in-print subscriptions. I’m not going to pay twice for the same content. Yea, its great that I can carry it around on my device, but it’s not worth paying for my magazine subs all over again just for that convenience. You guys need to implement something like what Next Issue has been doing for months now where you can input your subscription information for various magazines and automatically get the digital version for free or at most $.99. The app looks good, so I gave 2 stars, but until this issue is fixed, definitely won’t get 5 stars from me.

It’s ok for a first release, but it has a few minor issues. It doesn’t hold a wake lock, so the screen very quickly turns off in the middle of reading. It also doesn’t deal with being switched out of the foreground well as it has to reload things all the time.

I have been searching for a magazine app that has the following requirements: East to use, Easy to purchase items, Ability to view magazines in original format as well as specialized views for reading. Off-line usage! Both Portrait & Landscape modes of viewing! Well, it meets and sometimes passes my expectations. Now for the negatives (and the reasons for not giving a full 5 star rating): Unable to search for magazines within app, or even Google’s own Play Store Android app. Can only see the magazine selection from web browser. Very small selection of magazines, so far! Hopefully, both negatives will get addressed in time! UPDATE: Using it more, and comparing it to another magazine app that I am trying out, I found a few more features that I would like to have. One is the ability to share (or email) a story and another is to see a page layout mini view to quickly move to other pages. This other app shows a side by side two page view, and it can display about 20 pages onscreen at once. The other app is Zinio. Other apps did not impress me with subscription models. So for me its really between Google’s Magazine and or Zinio.
