Metal Slug Awakening user reviews :

You eventually hit a wall where you gotta either pay for higher gear, do activities you don’t want to do, have to be a certain level (then it’s difficult to level up), or get completely stuck. Fun while it lasted, but I’ve played too many games where it gets suddenly quick and then I can’t progress because I have to replay the same boring missions, level up once, then rinse and repeat.

A lot of fun and easy controls. Good graphics, too. But I did have one issue. The game froze when i used a “dig” pickaxe. I have no clue what i got, if anything. Since it froze right before the item was revealed. Waited over a minute to see if time would fix the issue. No buttons/options. Background music was still going on. After that, I closed the app and booted it back up to find my pickaxe was used, but I dont know what i got.

I do enjoy the nostalgia of Metal Slug. However it do well with mobile and monetization mix with it. As of now its glitches, the controls aren’t that responsive, and the gameplay is clunky. I feel held back when moving and jumping around. The control aren’t smooth and the button configuration are off to me. It should be a little more up beat. There should be an option for auto targeting and shooting. That way you can focus more on jumping and dodging and using skills.

The game is great. Mechanics are explained well enough. My main complaint is that energy takes a ridiculously long time to get back. 1 energy every 6 minutes (10 energy per hour). 160 energy max and most missions are 20+ energy. Im currently at 25/160 and have to wait over 13 hours to get back to 160. I’ll keep playing long-term, but the limiting energy regeneration makes you unable to play the game for long periods.

Yeah, the great memmories, nostalgia and stuff, yes. BUT this game is based on the new popular pay to win, spend daily to advance platform. So, if you just wish to get back to childhood, it’s a week of time, till you go through the main story. Then it’s over. All the events running over you constantly, require you to have upgraded weapons and heroes – aquired by spending real $$$. Will give it another week or so, but won’t get my money.

While retaining some of the classic feel of the game, this version of metal slug is all about microtransactions. It is pay to win, yet you can win regardless. Still it is very much designed and incentivises using real money. Lastly there is no controller integration and you can play this on PC if you want. I don’t recommend this.

Metal Slug was one of my favorite series of all time and I still to this day play through the series a few times a year! The devs did a great job of keeping the feel of the original while tweaking it for the modern mobile gaming market. Creating several new progression systems that could bring some depth to the original, satisfying but repetitive game loop. I’m just shy of ten hours in and so far micro transactions haven’t been intrusive nor do they feel like it’s a must buy to progress.
