Hnefatafl – The hunt for the king

[Game] Hnefatafl

Hnefatafl  Hnefatafl is an ancient Scandinavian board game whose variants were played all over medieval Europe before chess was even invented.

In those so called Tafl games two different sized armies fight each other. The invading black army tries to capture the white king, while the defending white army tries to protect their king and help him escape.

Often also called the Game of the Vikings Hnefatafl tells many stories, like the Moskowites invasion of Sweden or the Viking hordes pillaging Britain. But no matter what the story is one thing always stays the same: The hunt for the king.

Even though the rules aren’t complicated the game offers fascinating strategies and rewards tactical play. Try to surround the enemy pieces, plan ahead, lay traps and force your opponent into surrender. Will you capture the king for gold and glory? Can the loyal guards hold back the invading forces and secure the flight of their king?

For offline and online play you can create your own custom variants — with over 200,000 different variants possible!

The game features cross platform play with iOS, Windows and Linux and you can use a single account to access all your matches from any of your devices. The multiplayer is asynchronous so you can continue your matches whenever you want.

Hnefatafl user reviews :

This has all you need if interested in this fascinating ancient game, including all the main variants, the ability to customize the game and the rules to create your own variants, online play, tournaments, decent graphics, and great developers who listen to feedback and strive to keep improving the game. I would recommend downloading some of the available mods from within the game. I like the carefully crafted historical pieces and boards based on archaeological finds. It’s good to have these additional graphical options to cater for different tastes. I also have the Steam version for PC, and the good news is that online games are synced between the two versions. I can’t give an authoritative opinion on the AI yet as I am still learning the game, but it is giving me a decent challenge for now. I do like the seletion of available AI characters, who each have their own playing style. I suspect that I will switch focus to online play anyway once I have mastered the basics. Great game!

This is a faithful recreation of an awesome historic board game! Very user friendly interface, and faithful to the rules of the game as observed by Linnaeus’ latin rules, transcribed in antiquity (17-18th century?) and digitised/uploaded in 2010. Many have tried and failed to re-create this Viking game for our 21st century. With many variants available, as well as a custom mode to completely tailor the rules to your preferences, along with an ELO ratings system, makes this the best tafl app!

This app is the best implementation of the tafl genre of boardgames that I’ve ever seen. There’s almost infinite customisation over the rules of the game, every size of board from 7×7 to 19×19. Multiplayer also works without any issues at all. I highly recommend this app to anyone who wants to play Tafl.

Thanks for making such games. People should know such kind of games exist and not lost in this world. Gives perspectives of different ways people think. Good job.

Probably the best mobile hnefatafl game. With many game modes and easy to very hard AI.

Delightful, fun, and creative! A refreshing step away from modern Chess and Checkers which do not offer much room for creativity. I firmly believe that this is due to the fact that Hnefatfl and it’s Roman counterpart Latrunculi retain more of the elements you’d expect to find in the Art of War. In Chess and Checkers (or Draughts) the rules feel very arbitrary and have no real connection to the Art of War. This results in lack of creative play and empty memorization.
