Yomiwa Japanese Translator is an easy way to translate Japanese with your camera in real-time.
Yomiwa displays English translations of Japanese characters: single kanjis & full words written with kanjis, hiraganas, katakanas, when you aim at them with the camera . You can also take a picture or upload one from your own files and translate Japanese text in them. Yomiwa also has a built-in drawing feature for you to draw and translate Japanese characters on your touch-screen, in order to learn and practice writing Japanese. Yomiwa also includes a dictionary searchable in Japanese (text or drawing) or English.
Yomiwa works fully offline. Yomiwa can recognize more than 3000 different kanjis and all hiraganas and katakanas.

This is by far the best app I’ve ever gotten to help in my Japanese studies. All the other alternatives I’ve ever tried are clunky and almost never accurate. Yomiwa is not only almost always correct as long as you can get a decent picture, it’s dictionary is fantastic as well. It’s not uncommon for me to be unable to find a particular word (or slang) in my other dictionaries or on Google and Yomiwa has come through for me there on many occasions. Best $5 I’ve ever spent.
The app’s expansive dictionary and many example sentences are helpful and the camera recognition of characters functions well and is very useful. The ability to make word lists and an integrated browser make the app a great study aid. However, the handwritten character recognition program is seriously flawed. The app repeatedly failed to correctly identify handwritten kanji, even simple ones such as 力、木、大、三 and 日. Regardless of size, neatness and stroke order, handwritten characters were misidentified. The suggested characters included seemingly random letters of the alphabet, numerals and kana. Changing the character detection algorithm from fast to accurate and back again did not seem to have any noticeable effect. While the app does contain many useful features, this issue is in dire need of a fix.
Wonderful! Thank you so much! It is true you need to pay for the camera feature, but even if you just use the writing part it is brilliant and so useful! Some of my study books are entirely in japanese and many kanjis don’t have furigana. I looked a lot for this kind of app… Now I just write in it what I see and it lets me know the meaning of the word and of each kanji. Not only that, but it also offers stroke order, and more words with each kanji as well as saying for which JLPT it is used. Thank you very much!! It really makes a difference
This is the absolute best dictionary app I’ve ever used. It already handles finger drawing and searching, but the small priced upgrade gives a very, very accurate screen and camera reader. Can’t recommend it enough
