Maybe this’ll just take getting used to, but it feels like my basic attacks take way too long to recharge. I can’t tell if it’s real time or turn-based or a mix, but either way, it doesn’t feel right to be able to use specials more often than basic. Other than that, the game is great! An amazing introduction to final fantasy 7 since I haven’t played it before (and refuse to pay money on a console for the exclusive remake, thanks Sony.)
In my brief experience with this title it has the potential to be the game of the year. The battles and cutscenes are breathtaking. The adventuring aspect will give a sense of nostalgia back to the PSone days. Things were cut short, however, as I received a ‘network error’ message during my initial playthrough forcing me back to the main screen. The app just launched so hope a fix will be coming soon. Also, I am interested to see if a paywall emerges at some point being it is F2P.
So, it started beautifully. The intro music brought me back to my childhood. But that is where the nostalgia ended. The screen told me it was loading. After several retries, and turning off and on WiFi and data, the screen continued to stay darker than Sephiroth’s personality. I will keep it on my phone and try again in a few days. If it doesn’t work, then even Holy cannot save it from being deleted.
You can tell the developers have a real love for FF7. The scenery, still frame backgrounds, music – it’s so nostalgic and beautifully presented. The story telling is superb and really brings you back to the PS1 era. The mechanics of a free game are there, however you don’t feel burdened by copious amounts of materials needed for upgrades. Every character’s upgrades feel obtainable and the grind is made easier with a great navigational menu. This is very impressive for a mobile experience.
